OK so before we hear all the Jokes this is not an April fool this is indeed a new high performance bio-composite technology made from carrots by two expert materials scientists, Dr David Hepworth and Dr Eric Whale.

With innovations in new materials being one of the key drivers in the rapid progress of technology during the 20th and into the 21st century; the two best known and widely used examples being glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP) and carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP), which are ubiquitous in many applications. However neither of these materials have 'Green' credentials and in addition there are many existing applications where their use is far from ideal and emerging applications for which neither is optimal - what is actually needed is a material that is a combination of both. In short, there are large opportunities for new materials that can meet the technical performance requirements of strength, stiffness, weight and toughness as well as combating the emerging environmental, economic and legislative issues.

Cellucomp's branded and trademarked material CURRAN™ is made from a high strength biofibre. This fibre is submicroscopic (nanoscopic) and therefore not only provides incredible strength, stiffness and toughness but also a very smooth finish. The fibres themselves have stiffness of 130GPa, Strength of up to 5GPa and a failure strains of over 5% and therefore produce composites with unique high performance properties.

So why start this new technology on fly rods ?? Why not, after all both Dr Hepworth & Dr Whale are keen fishermen so where better to test new composites. As you'll already have guessed if this material is half as good as the claims made then it will roll out globally for all sorts of uses potentially replacing carbon fibre products in the everyday world and even open up new untapped opportunities.

CelluComp is utilising CURRAN™ in the development of a new revolutionary generation of fishing rods. This technology enables rods to be manufactured with previously unachievable combinations of properties. Cellucomp has also developed a unique moulding process, allowing blanks to be tailored to an individual anglers requirements.

Rods made using CURRAN™ damp twice as rapidly as an equivalent carbon rod, while retaining the same rapid recovery speed as the carbon rod.

ROD FEATURES:

  • Mid – Tip action rod but very very powerful – distance casting is achieved with ease as is casting into the wind.
  • The rod blanks behave in a very unusual way with super fast dampening allowing the rod blank to settle almost immediately after casting.
  • Rod Blanks – Lighter stronger materials allows the rods to have thicker walls giving more strength and protection to everyday knocks
  • Rod eyes – Large chrome single leg rings hold the lines away from the rod blank and allow faster line speed with less friction
  • The handle is made with the finest cork and features a wood (yew) insert with pewter style fittings and a removable fighting butt to allow more control on larger fish
